Global Crisis

On Saturday, Brad Setser, following Peter Garnham, made the very important point that while the big countries' central banks have each others' backs, emerging-market countries are being left out in the cold.

For all the talk about how the G-7 has lost relevance, in a lot of ways the recent crisis has reinforced the G-7's importance. Banks in G-7 countries that borrowed in dollars have access to unlimited dollar financing from their central banks - dollar financing that comes from the fact that the main G-7 central banks have access to large swap lines with the Fed.
Banks in emerging market countries have no such luck.

The result is economic chaos around the world: no one, it seems, is immune to the crisis which started in the US housing sector but which is now truly global in nature. Korea, Hungary, Ukraine, Pakistan, Russia, Kazakhstan -- name the country, there's probably a banking crisis there. And then, of course, there's Iceland.

So I'm very puzzled by Dan Gross's column in Slate, saying that a bunch of countries without Starbucks seem to have been "safe havens". He says that Spain, with 48 Starbucks in Madrid alone, is "grappling with the bursting of a speculative coastal real-estate bubble", in contrast to Brazil, which has only 14 Starbucks for the entire country.

Italy hasn't suffered any major bank failures in part because its banking sector isn't very active on the international scene. The number of Starbucks there? Zero. And the small countries of Northern Europe, whose banking systems have been largely spared, are largely Starbucks-free.

In what conceivable way can it be said that Brazil, Italy, and smaller Northern European nations have fared better than Spain in this crisis? Spain's banks are well-regulated beacons of strength; the same can hardly be said of the big Brazilian banks -- overburdened by loans to agriculture and commodity companies -- or of entities like Unicredit or Fortis.

Maybe it's unfair to call out Gross for describing Argentina as "a pocket of relative strength" just as its president decides to nationalize the country's pension system, sending its stock market reeling. But Brazilian stocks have underperformed US stocks over the past few months, and its banks are no exception; Fortis, of course, ended up being nationalized.

Meanwhile, Spain's Santander, which had an option to buy the 76% of Sovereign Bank that it didn't already own at $38 per share, opportunistically swept in to buy it up at $3.81 a share instead. And then of course there's Japan -- full of Starbucks, but one of the few countries without a banking crisis.

But never mind Gross's Starbucks conceit -- does he have a bigger point?

Having a significant Starbucks presence is a pretty significant indicator of the degree of connectedness to the form of highly caffeinated, free-spending capitalism that got us into this mess. It's also a sign of a culture's willingness to abandon traditional norms and ways of doing business (virtually all the countries in which Starbucks has established beachheads have their own venerable coffee-house traditions) in favor of fast-moving American ones.

Nice idea, but it's not true. Look at Germany: those stodgy, Starbucks-free, slow-to-spend capitalists have the largest banking-sector bailout of all.

And more generally, this is no replay of the dot-com crash, where investors in high-flying earnings-free technology stocks suddenly found themselves running on air. The biggest losses this time round haven't been in high-risk assets: they've been in instruments which carried triple-A credit ratings and which were meant to be very low risk.

This is an equal-opportunity crisis: it's hit rich countries and poor ones, importers and exporters, ultracapitalist risk-takers and boring state-owned savings institutions. Just about the only places relatively unscathed are the poorest of the poor, the bottom billion, who are seeing global food prices come down from starvation-inducing levels -- the people who don't have any savings to lose.

Mineral Basah Ditemukan Di Mars

Scientists discover paternal baldness gene

Bonn, Germany (ANTARA News/dpa) - Scientists say they have found at last the gene that causes some men to go prematurely bald like their fathers.

The same team discovered a baldness gene three years ago that can only be passed on by women to their sons, which would explain why some men's hair loss resembles that of their maternal grandfathers.

Now the geneticists at the German universities of Bonn and Dusseldorf have zeroed in on a gene that both fathers and mothers can pass to their sons, which would explain commonly noticed father-son resemblances in hair thinning.

A group of British scientists discovered the gene at almost the same moment. Both jointly published the findings Sunday in the online edition of Nature Genetics.

The Bonn team led by Axel Hillmer studied more than 500,000 genetic markers as they hunted for features that were common in men who go bald in middle age or earlier.

Once they discover how the gene influences hair growth, it will be possible to consider therapies that thwart the effect. Hillmer's team cautioned that other genes were also potentially involved, making the problem complex. (*)

home sales rise

It's estimated 33 to 40 percent of sales activity is coming from foreclosures or other distressed properties

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sales of existing homes rose in July, surpassing expectations, as buyers snapped up deeply discounted properties in parts of the U.S. hit hardest by the housing bust.

It's estimated 33 to 40 percent of sales activity is coming from foreclosures or other distressed properties

However, the number of unsold properties hit an all-time high, the latest indication that the worst housing slump in decades is far from over. Prices nationwide are not expected to hit bottom until early next year.

The National Association of Realtors reported Monday that sales rose 3.1 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5 million units, down from June's downwardly revised rate of 4.85 million units. Sales had been expected to rise by only 1.6 percent, according to economists surveyed by Thomson/IFR.

"The process of a recovery has begun," said Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors. "It's not going to be short and swift, but it's begun nonetheless."

Home sales were about 13 percent lower than a year ago and prices were down dramatically. The median price for a home sold in July dropped to $212,000, down by 7.1 percent from a year ago.

Despite the third monthly sales increase this year, the number of unsold single-family homes and condominiums rose to 4.67 million, the highest number since 1968, when the Realtors group started tracking the data.

That represented a 11.2-month supply at the July sales pace, matching the all-time high set in April.

Until the inventory level is reduced to more normal levels, analysts say, the housing slump is likely to persist. The inventory level is being driven higher by a massive wave of mortgage foreclosures.

Between 33 and 40 percent of sales activity is coming from foreclosures or other distressed properties, he estimated.

While buyers are pouncing on lower prices -- especially in places like California, Florida and Nevada -- sales are sluggish in formerly stable states like Texas.

"People are responding to lower prices," Yun said, but there is "too much uncertainty" about the housing market's future to mark a definite bottom.

In Las Vegas, sales were up 96 percent in July, after prices fell more than 25 percent to a median of $220,000, according to The Associated Press-Re/Max Monthly Housing Report, which analyzed home sales recorded by all real estate agents in 55 cities, regardless of company affiliation.

Sales in Los Angeles jumped 31 percent after prices fell 35 percent over the past year to a median of $335,000, according to the AP-Re/Max report.

In Miami, sales were up 9 percent while prices dropped nearly 10 percent to a median of $280,000. One of those sellers last month was Jennifer Del Pino, who unloaded her 3,600 square-foot (334 sq. meter) Miami home to a buyer from Germany for $490,000.

She cut her asking price by $60,000, but sold her house in about a month.

"It's kind of a relief for me," she said.

One key unknown for the U.S. housing market is the future ability of mortgage finance companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to supply money for loans. The two government-sponsored companies have dramatically cut back the availability of mortgages as they cope with mounting losses from foreclosures.

President George W. Bush last month signed sweeping housing legislation that aims to prevent foreclosures by allowing an estimated 400,000 homeowners to swap their mortgages for more affordable loans, but only if their lender agrees to take a loss on the initial loan.

Even with government help, nearly 2.8 million U.S. households will either face foreclosure, turn over their homes to their lender or sell the properties for less than their mortgage's value by the end of next year, predicts Moody's Economy.com.

Bahagia Bikin Panjang Umur

TETAPLAH senandungkan lagu Don't Worry Be Happy.

The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future, 2007.

Invisibilty cloak

Scientists have created a cloaking device that can reroute certain wavelengths of light, forcing them around objects like water flowing around boulders in a stream. To creatures or machines that see only in microwave light, the cloaked object would appear nearly invisible.

"The microwaves come in and are swept around the cloak and reconstructed on the other side while avoiding the interior region," said study team member David Smith at Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering. "So it looks as if they just passed through free space."

The device [image] only works in the microwave range of light, so cloaked objects are still visible to humans. Also, it only works in two dimensions and only for microwaves moving in a plane. A three-dimensional invisibility cloak would hide an object completely. The microwave cloak is also slightly reflective and casts a partial shadow.

Despite these shortcomings, however, the new device is "a very good achievement," said Ulf Leonhardt, a theorist at the University of St. Andrews in England who was not involved in the study.

"It's surprising that it's as simple as it is and that it works so well," Leonhardt said in a related news article about the work in the journal Science.

The achievement, reported online today by the journal, comes five months after the same team published a study detailing the precise mathematical specifications a needed to build such a cloaking device.

Metamaterials

The apparatus was made using "metamaterials," artificial materials engineered to have precisely patterned surfaces that interact with and manipulate light in novel ways.

Although called a cloak, the device is not something that can be worn. Rather, it consists of a series of concentric circles, made of copper rings and wires patterned onto sheets of fiberglass, and resembles a loosely coiled reel of film.

The patterns enable the manipulation of light, and the size of the patterns determines which wavelengths of light can be manipulated. Smaller patterns affect shorter the wavelengths. Microwaves have relatively long wavelengths and can be affected with metamaterials having relatively large patterns. Manipulating visible light, which has much shorter wavelengths, will require metamaterials with much finer patterns.

While making those finer patterns is possible with current nanomanufacturing technologies, the metals used to make the microwave cloak would behave differently with visible light, Smith said.

"They act very differently at optical wavelengths; they become very absorptive. A cloaked object would just become very opaque, rather than transparent," he told LiveScience.

But even if metamaterials are made that can deflect visible light, don't expect the kind of invisibility offered by Harry Potter's cloak or Star Trek cloaking devices any time soon.

Human eyes are sensitive to many different wavelengths of light, as evidenced by the rainbow of colors that we see, and it's still uncertain if metamaterials can deflect so many wavelengths simultaneously.

Still useful

But even imperfect cloaking devices might be useful, the researchers say. Cloaks that deflect radio waves could render an object invisible to radar or improve cell phone receptions by rerouting signals around obstructions. They might also be used to protect people from penetrating and harmful radiation.

"If you knew that you had radiation of a certain bandwidth frequency, you could have it skirt around some region that you wanted shielded," Smith said.

The team says the next step is to create a cloak that works in three dimensions and to perfect the cloaking effect.

Roket Indonesia Paling Canggih

Crude oil futures pass $130 a barrel for the first time on supply concerns, weak dollar.

Crude oil prices are shooting further into record territory, breaking above $130 a barrel for the first time on persistent supply concerns and a weaker dollar and heading for $180 a barrel.

The July contract for light, sweet crude rose as high as $130.30 in electronic trade on the New York Mercantile Exchange late afternoon Wednesday in Singapore.

Concerns that OPEC won’t increase its crude production before September fed some of the buying. Also, the dollar has been weakening against the euro and yen the last two days after appearing to be on a recovery track.

Oil futures are now selling for about twice what they were just a year ago.

In the short term — say, the next two years or so — we’re looking at bad news about global oil supply that could take the price of a barrel of crude to $180.

Needless to say, today’s $3.50-a-gallon gasoline would look cheap if oil prices hit $180 a barrel. At that price for a barrel of oil, gasoline would cost somewhere north of $5.50 a gallon.

Read

The good news is that’s about the price, experts now say, that would send global consumption tumbling and oil prices into retreat, as drivers scrambled to find ways to conserve.

So why do I think oil prices will keep climbing for two more years at least?

A terrible coincidence of geology and geopolitics. Just when oil is getting more expensive to produce, the oil industries in three key countries — Mexico, Russia and Nigeria — find themselves short of cash. And without that cash, oil production in these countries, and global oil production in general, is headed into a decline.

GLobal Warming

Global warming is the heating up of the earth’s temperatures. This has been studied in great detail during recent times and scientists are trying to find ways to slow down or stop global warming.

The main issue with global warming is how off balance it will throw the world. With the temperatures steadily getting hotter and hotter it can start to melt the icecaps and let harmful UV rays from the sun in. These effects will cause massive damage to the earth and the way we live life.

Before you get scared of all this you should know there are solutions. The first solution comes in the form of fossil fuels. We use gasoline and diesel to power our cars, boats, planes, trains and most any moving vehicle we have. The problem comes when the fossil fuel is being burned and the exhaust hits the atmosphere effectively destroying it. This also applies to homes, businesses, and anything that requires electricity.

The best way to fight these negative effects is by using alternative fuel sources. By using these alternative fuels we are helping fight the effects of global warming while still proving the power we need.

If global warming isn’t stopped it could lead to some disastrous problems we will face in the world. Imagine having to wear sun block just to get your mail or for a quick run to the grocery store.

Not all of the problems associated with global warming are caused by us. Volcanoes are also helping to cause this warming effect on the earth. However, we cannot prevent a volcano from erupting. What we need to do is take action against the little things that humans personally cause to create global warming. If everyone takes small steps it will help us all make a big leap in preventing global warming in the future.

How Vehicle Tracking Technology Has Changed

Fleet tracking technology has been around for decades, but only recently has it become practical and affordable for even the smallest fleet operators. From the earliest systems of two-way radios to sophisticated GPS and computer tracking of today, vehicle tracking technology has evolved and improved tremendously.

Early systems

The earliest vehicle tracking systems started with the advent of two way radios. With a radio in each vehicle and a base station, fleet operators could talk to their drivers and map their progress through each days route. Changes and emergent calls could be sent out to the field more easily, making operations more efficient.

The downside, of course, is that radio communications had limitations in distance, accuracy, and the ability to connect with drivers going in and out of their vehicle. The information received at the base station was only as good as what the drivers provided, and for fleets of any significant size, tracking and mapping progress manually was a challenge.

The dawn of GPS

When GPS tracking became widely available, it transformed the vehicle tracking landscape. Fleet operators could now locate each vehicle electronically and track it via computer, making it easier to keep track of large numbers of vehicles and verify the information provided by drivers. Of course the early systems were tremendously expensive, making them far out of reach economically for all but the largest fleets.

As GPS units became smaller and cheaper, and computer tracking capabilities became more advanced and less expensive, the modern fleet tracking systems took shape. Each vehicle carried a tracking unit that was monitored and information communicated back to the central base station, while the base station expanded in size and complexity to handle the large amounts of information coming in.

Companies that use this type of fleet tracking have to invest significant amounts of capital in the vehicle units as well as the infrastructure for a central base station to monitor and dispatch the fleet. There are expensive monthly subscription fees as well.

A new innovation

A recent innovation in the vehicle tracking industry is transforming the efficiency and affordability of fleet tracking systems. This new system uses a small tracking unit in the vehicle and a web-based interface that is accessed via a regular mobile telephone. There is no investment required in expensive central infrastructure and fleet managers can monitor the system from anywhere for no monthly subscription fee. This allows supervisors and managers to spend more time in the field and less time in the office.

The affordability of this new technology makes it practical for even the smallest fleets. This in turn brings the benefits of vehicle tracking less driver downtime, more efficient routing, etc. to operators of all sizes and compositions.

The future of vehicle tracking

Of course nobody can predict the future with 100% accuracy, but most industry experts agree that the new wave of technology is leading vehicle tracking into a new era of convenience and affordability. For the first time ever, small and medium fleets can afford to adopt vehicle tracking and enjoy the many benefits that come along with greater efficiency.
